一、某些形容詞僅作表語：
1.某些以a-開頭的形容詞：
able有能力的aware意識到了的
afraid害怕的alive活著的
alone單獨的ashamed羞愧的asleep睡著的awake醒著的
Don’t be afraid.別怕.
Now the baby is asleep.現在孩子睡著了.
He was alone in the house.他獨自一人在家裡.
若要用作定語且具有以上意義，可改用其他形容詞：
誤：an asleep child，an ashamed girl，an alive poet
正：a sleeping child，a shy girl，a living poet
2.某些表示健康的形容詞：
fine健康的ill有病的
well身體健康的
“How’s your wife？”“She’s fine，thank you.”“你妻子好嗎？”“她很好，”
He was ill and couldn’t come.他病了，所以不能來.
【注】在美國英語中，表示健康狀況的ill和well有時也用作定語.另外，以上詞語若不是表示以上意思，則可用作定語：fine weather好天氣，ill news壞消息
3.某些描述感覺或心情的形容詞：
glad高興的pleased高興的
sorry難過的
I’m glad to hear that.聽到這消息我很高興.
You will be sorry about this later.對這件事你以後會後悔的.
We are very pleased with the plan.我們對這個計畫很滿意.
【注】若用於其他意思，則可用作定語，如glad表示“（感到）高興的”時，只用作表語；若表示“令人高興的”，則只用作定語（glad news好消息）.
4.其他表語形容詞：
certain確信的，一定的sure確信的，一定的
fond喜歡的，溫柔的ready準備好的，願意的
unable不能…的
I’m certain [sure] he will come.我確信他會來.
He is fond of music.他喜歡音樂.
We are ready to do it.我們已準備好做這事.
【注】若用於其他意義，有的也可用作定語，如certain表示“某”時，只能用作定語：a certain person某人.
二、定語形容詞
所謂定語形容詞即指只位於名詞前作定語（即前置定語），而不用作表語的形容詞，如elder（年歲較大的），eldest（最年長的），daily（每日的），everyday（每日的），last（剛過去的）等：
Janet is Mary’s elder sister.珍尼特是瑪麗的姐姐.
Her eldest daughter works in a bank.他最大的女兒在銀行工作.
He is practising everyday English.他在練習日常英語.
He went home last Sunday.他上周星期日回家了.
