If line L1: ax by + 4 = 0 and line L2: (A-1) x + y + B = 0 are parallel and the distance between the two lines at the origin is equal, find a and B Doesn't that mean the two lines coincide? I'm a / (A-1) = - B / 1 = 4 / b I see, but why can't I work out the answer by using the distance equality formula

It's not easy to calculate the equal distance
You can do this by using two equal slopes and two opposite intercepts on the y-axis
b/a=1/(1-a)
4/b=b
have to
a=2 b=-2
Or a = 2 / 3, B = 2
